"Animal Lovers push for tag to help spay-neuter program..."  (Macon Telegraph, Saturday, Sep.22, '01)...

Advocates from Humane Services and Greyhounds Galore in Macon, Save-a-pet in Monroe County and the metro Atlanta-based Humane Association of  Georgia are among those who hope to see the license plates on automobiles starting in 2003.  The groups have filled out the paperwork needed to start the process, and now it's up to the Georgia Assembly,  where two pieces of legislation would be required to make the tag a reality.

House Resolution 264:  Would put the plate on the ballot for voters to decide if voluntary funds can be designated to fund spay and neuter programs for companion animals.

HB 945:  Would add the language to the Georgia Code for selling the tag and administering the spay and neuter program.

If both items clear the House and Senate in the 2002 legislative session and are then signed by Gov. Roy Barnes, the referendum would appear on the November 2002 ballot!

Let your Legislators know you want this to happen!

The bill is structured so that all of the money generated from the sale of the license plate would be used strictly for statewide spay and neuter programs.  Veterinarians would perform sterilization procedures and receive a fixed fee through a contractual agreement with the Department of Agriculture.
